Many trucking companies all over Canada will be forced to make changes after it was announced that a new Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate is going take effect on June 12, 2021. Trucking companies that cover long distances, especially cross border shipments between Canada and the U.S will have to comply with this new mandate. If you are in any way affected, it’s important to understand the differences between the ELD mandate in Canada and what exists in the states.
One important requirement in the Canadian ELD Mandate is that all truck drivers will have to be certified by a third party. This is somewhat different from what happens in the U.S. In the United States, the manufacturer can certify the ELD device. However, in Canada, any manufacturer of ELD devices who would like to offer this certification of ELD devices will have to apply and become part of a third-party certification program.
